today i went for a haircup, my barber talks a lot, sometimes he even stoped cutting just a talk. Wich i find ? annoying. On the other hand i'm always entertained for 30 minustes when he cuts my hair. He does a good job and charges me $18. This is not the chippest but not the more expensive in Vancouvert. He told me than he became canada at the sixteen yold, 20 years ago. He went the hair dressing school and worked for a chain of hair saloon for 5 years in different location in the city.
He got now the personnality of different kinds of clients. He didnt like working in heavely chinese district richmond because in his words , the customers were arrive late and espect to be served right away if will not served immediatly they ?sound? that the customer whose has been serve in their place had paid an extra, he did not like the pressure of that situation.
He eventualy opened his own shop in north vancouver he say that he made sure learn about all the subjects that his clients were interested in from fly fiching to the sock market. He knew that if customers like him they would come back. After 20 years in Canada dealing daily with english speaking canadian clients, his English is just terrible. His prononciation of words, structure, name it, are all quite poor. When he talked about a leading politician and his wife 'he' and 'she' were regulary used wrong i had trable understanding whom he was talking about.
People who are not used to chinese accent must have trouble understanding him, his english is poor eaven by the standard of his native Hong Kong, just being immersed in the language and talking language will not necesserly improve you. you need to want to improve.
You need to have a deliberate program of improvement you need to listen. On the other hand he was successfull at building up customer base and didn't seem to feel inhibited in any way by his poor English. He was a communicator, although a better talker than a listener, i have not suggested to him that he join linguist.
